Role and Responsibilities in Driving Leading Practice Adoption

The primary role of a MOSH Adoption Team is to facilitate the identification and widespread adoption of leading health and safety practices within their specific area of focus, This role is supported by structured planning and operational processes that align with the MOSH system’s goal of achieving Zero Harm in the South African mining industry.

Knowledge Building and Expert Engagement

To ensure the adoption of evidence-based practices, teams begin by reviewing prior research, including but not limited to SIMRAC findings and engage both local and international experts. Supplier consultations also contribute to building a strong base of technical knowledge.

Issue Interrogation and Mine Engagement

Adoption Teams conduct in-depth mine visits to better understand operational challenges, associated hazards and risks, as well as existing barriers and enablers. These site-level insights are critical in identifying relevant and effective leading practices.

Strategic Planning and Team Development

Systematic planning involves selecting the mines or mine groups best positioned to benefit from specific practices or technologies. In parallel, teams work to identify and engage representatives from these mines to participate in workshops, strengthening the collaborative capacity of the Adoption Team.

Value Case Development and Leadership Alignment

Adoption Teams develop cost-benefit analyses and broader value cases to demonstrate the practical and economic advantages of proposed solutions. They also prepare strategic materials and facilitate leadership planning sessions to align support for implementation.

Quality Assurance and Knowledge Sharing

Teams are responsible for critically reviewing internal documents to ensure quality, relevance and consistency. To scale adoption, they establish and manage Communities of Practice for Adoption (COPA), a key mechanism for peer learning and practice replication across operations.

Monitoring and Reporting

Adoption progress is tracked through clearly defined performance indicators. Teams contribute data to tracking systems and submit regular updates to leadership forums, such as the CEO Zero Harm Leadership Forum, ensuring visibility and accountability.
