Traffic Management for Open Pit/Cast Operations in South Africa
At a MOSH Transport and Machinery planning workshop held in October 2014, industry representatives identified the need for effective traffic management in open pit and open cast mining operations as a leading practice. This initiative was recognised as a vital step toward achieving meaningful progress in occupational health and safety outcomes within the sector.
The events addressed by the Traffic Management Leading Practice include
- Injury to persons through collision with mobile machinery in Open Pit/Cast operations
- Injury to persons on foot (pedestrians) caused by mobile machinery in operation
- Injury to persons entering hazardous areas
- Injury to persons entering restricted areas
To systematically address these critical safety concerns, the MOSH Traffic Management Leading Practice comprises eighteen core elements. These elements were identified by the MOSH Open Pit/Cast Industry Team as essential for the development and implementation of an effective Traffic Management System tailored to the unique demands of mining environments.
