Critical Noise Equipment Screening Tool

To support the effective implementation of noise management criteria in the mining sector, the Critical Noise Equipment Screening Tool was developed within the framework of the Integrated Behavioural and Management Quality Index (IBMQI). This tool is designed to assess and manage the noise exposure risk posed to employees by noisy equipment, using a structured set of factors identified through the IBMQI.

These key variables include:

  • Noise measurement results (dBA)
  • Number of persons exposed
  • Number of machines operating in the environment
  • Duration of exposure
  • Acoustical environment
  • Machine vibration levels
  • Equipment maintenance status
  • Availability of equipment improvements or noise control solutions
  • Use and effectiveness of hearing protection devices (HPDs)
  • Critical noise frequency range

As a primary output, the tool enables mining operations to identify and select appropriate machinery by ranking equipment according to risk. It also guides the development of processes for managing repair and maintenance tasks associated with noisy equipment and fixed plant.

In addition to its role in evaluating existing machinery, the Critical Noise Equipment Screening Tool is also designed to support the screening of new technologies or equipment prior to procurement. This proactive approach assists in reducing noise exposure at source, supporting compliance with noise regulation milestones and contributing to the industry's goal of eliminating Noise-Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL).
